Chỉ & Quán - Samatha & Vipassana

Gắn Liền Cột Chặt
(AN 4.170)

Yuganaddha Sutta: In Tandem
translated from the Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu

On one occasion Ven. Ananda was staying in Kosambi, at Ghosita's monastery. There he addressed the monks, "Friends!"

"Yes, friend," the monks responded.

Ven. Ananda said: "Friends, whoever — monk or nun — declares the attainment of arahantship in my presence, they all do it by means of one or another of four paths. Which four?

"There is the case where a monk has developed insight preceded by tranquillity. As he develops insight preceded by tranquillity, the path is born. He follows that path, develops it, pursues it. As he follows the path, developing it and pursuing it — his fetters are abandoned, his obsessions destroyed.

"Then there is the case where a monk has developed tranquillity preceded by insight. As he develops tranquillity preceded by insight, the path is born. He follows that path, develops it, pursues it. As he follows the path, developing it and pursuing it — his fetters are abandoned, his obsessions destroyed.

"Then there is the case where a monk has developed tranquillity in tandem with insight. As he develops tranquillity in tandem with insight, the path is born. He follows that path, develops it, pursues it. As he follows the path, developing it and pursuing it — his fetters are abandoned, his obsessions destroyed.

"Then there is the case where a monk’s mind is seized by agitation concerning the Dhamma (dhammuddhaccaviggahitam manasam) [*]. But there comes a time when his mind becomes internally steadied, settles down, and becomes unified and concentrated (samadhiyati). In him the path is born. He follows that path, develops it, pursues it. As he follows the path, developing it and pursuing it — his fetters are abandoned, his obsessions destroyed.

"Whoever — monk or nun — declares the attainment of arahantship in my presence, they all do it by means of one or another of these four paths."

[*] Other translation:

(Nyanaponika Thera): "... a monk’s mind is seized by agitation caused by higher states of mind".

(Sister Upalavana): "... the bhikkhu's mind seized by rightful agitation".

Notes (from: http://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=8218 ) :

1) It is possible that the “agitation caused by higher states of mind” is mental restlessness brought on by eagerness to realize the Dhamma, a state of spiritual anxiety that sometimes can precipitate an instantaneous enlightenment experience. For an example, see the story of Bāhiya Dārucīriya at Ud 1.10.

2) The word "dhammuddhaccaviggahitam" in fact contains "uddhacca" - one of the pair in the set of uddhacca-kukkucca - restlessness and remorse.

It also ties in with the Pamsudhovaka Sutta AN 3.100, where dhammavitakka (thoughts about the Dhamma) poses a challenge to those trying to settle into samadhi :

“When he has abandoned these, there still remain thoughts about the dhamma (dhamma vitakka). That samadhi is not yet peaceful and sublime; it has not attained to full tranquillity, nor has it achieved mental unification (ekodibhava) ; it is maintained by strenuous suppression of the defilements .

But there comes a time when his mind becomes inwardly steadied , composed , unified (ekodi), and concentrated (samadhiyati) . That samadhi is then calm and refined; it has attained to full tranquillity and achieved mental unification (ekodibhava); it is not maintained by strenuous suppression of the defilements. Then to whatever dhamma realizable by supernormal knowledge he directs his mind, he achieves the capacity of realizing that state by supernormal knowledge, whenever the necessary conditions obtain .”

Dịch:

16 Rules for Depressions

1. Try to be PERFECT.

2. Be very critical of any mistakes or failures you might make.

3. Do what you SHOULD do, even if it is not what you want to do.

4. Always do what you are supposed to be doing.

5. Make other persons happy at any cost to yourself.

6. Work hard at pleasing your most severe critic.

7. Know that if you don’t please, the other will reject or leave you.

8. Never make a mistake.

9. Live alone and have few friends.

10. Keep your failures, mistakes, errors and faults to yourself. Never let anyone know of them, because you never want anyone to know how bad you really are. Keep your secrets personal.

11. FEAR the future, because you know it will turn out bad.

12. WORRY about how bad it will be.

13. With such an awful future, try to be in control as much as possible. Knowing you are not in self control, seek to control others and events.

14. Knowing how you really are inside — your secret self — never listen to or accept praise or compliments. They will just make you big-headed and egotistical.

15. Recognize the true importance of a negative interpretation and be certain to always emphasize the negative, and generalize it to yourself whenever possible.

16. Avoid any awareness of how your negativeness affects others. You have an important role to fulfill for them, and they need your realistic balance.

Chó sói và Cừu non (The Wolf and the Lamb)

THE WOLF AND THE LAMB.

That innocence is not a shield,
A story teaches, not the longest.
The strongest reasons always yield
To reasons of the strongest.

A lamb her thirst was slaking,
Once, at a mountain rill.
A hungry wolf was taking
His hunt for sheep to kill,
When, spying on the streamlet’s brink
This sheep of tender age,

He howl’d in tones of rage,
‘How dare you roil my drink?
Your impudence I shall chastise!’

‘Let not your majesty,’ the lamb replies,
‘Decide in haste or passion!
For sure ’tis difficult to think
In what respect or fashion
My drinking here could roil your drink,
Since on the stream your majesty now faces
I’m lower down, full twenty paces.’

‘You roil it,’ said the wolf; ‘and, more, I know
You cursed and slander’d me a year ago.’

‘O no! how could I such a thing have done!
A lamb that has not seen a year,
A suckling of its mother dear?’

‘Your brother then.’

‘But brother I have none.’

‘Well, well, what’s all the same,
’Twas some one of your name.
Sheep, men, and dogs of every nation,
Are wont to stab my reputation,
As I have truly heard.’

Without another word,
He made his vengeance good —
Bore off the lambkin to the wood,
And there, without a jury,
Judged, slew, and ate her in his fury.

Meditation, a powerful tool against pain: study

AFP, April 6, 2011
*

Meditation can deliver powerful pain-relieving effects to the brain with even just 80 minutes' training for a beginner in an exercise called focused attention, a study released on Tuesday found.

"This is the first study to show that only a little over an hour of meditation training can dramatically reduce both the experience of pain and pain-related brain activation," said Fadel Zeidan, lead author of the study and a post-doctoral research fellow at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre in North Carolina.

The findings appear in the April 6 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.

"We found a big effect - about a 40 per cent reduction in pain intensity and a 57 per cent reduction in pain unpleasantness. Meditation produced a greater reduction in pain than even morphine or other pain-relieving drugs, which typically reduce pain ratings by about 25 per cent," he added.

Researchers looked at 15 fit volunteers who had never meditated. The subjects each took four 20-minute sessions to learn how to control their breathing and put aside their emotions and thoughts.

Before and after sessions, subjects' brain activity was monitored with a special type of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Called "arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance imaging" (ASL MRI), it is able to give readings on longer duration brain processes, such as meditation, better than a standard MRI scan of brain function.

When ASL MRIs were being taken, a pain-inducing heat device was put on participants' right legs. It heated a small area of their skin to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, which most people would find painful, for five minutes.

Scans taken after meditation training showed that all of the volunteers' pain ratings were reduced, with drops from 11 to 93 per cent, Zeidan said.

Meanwhile meditation also reduced brain activity in the primary somatosensory cortex, an area that is involved in creating the feeling of where and how intense a painful stimulus is.

Scans done before meditation training showed activity in this area was very high; but when participants were meditating during scans, activity in this important pain-processing region could not be detected.

"One of the reasons that meditation may have been so effective in blocking pain was that it did not work at just one place in the brain, but instead reduced pain at multiple levels of processing," Zeidan added.
